Course Design ConsultationsID@SHPRS can help you plan out a new course or revise an existing one. We look at your teaching materials, not from a position of subject matter expertise (that is your domain!) but from pedagogical and design perspectives.
One primary consideration in the design process is student experience. The goal is to remove as many unnecessary barriers as possible between the student and the subject matter of the course, so they can focus on learning. Instructor experience is also crucial. Making things as simple as possible for you to grade, communicate with students, and update materials, is a high priority. We will offer our professional opinion and support, but, of course, the choice is always yours—it is your course! The process is a conversational one. Our goal is to be a resource for support and perspective. |
The following is a list of considerations that we may discuss in our course design consultations:
- The best way to divide the course content into topics
- Adequate and measurable learning objectives
- Quantity and types of assessments
- Technologies to support the course
- Grading rubrics
- The best way to organize the course website
- Clear and thorough instructions for assignments
- Alignment with department, School, College, University, state, and national standards
- Accessibility for students with vision, hearing, or motor disabilities
- Aesthetic elements on the course website
Quality Matters
In addition to consultations for new or existing courses, we can also go through a Quality Matters Review of your course.
Quality Matters is an international body of higher-ed teaching faculty and learning design researchers, that has developed rubrics for ensuring high standards in online course design. It is often presented as a list of features to check for in a course, but it is much more than just a checklist. Done in the way it was intended, Quality Matters is a process—a system of collegial peer review, conversation, and iterative improvements. Quality Matters is the gold standard of online course review procedures.
A formal QM review requires three certified reviewers, one of whom is an expert in the topic matter of the course, to evaluate the course in a systematic and conversational way and bring the course up to its fullest potential.
An informal QM review can be done by one or two people, and simply uses the rubric as a guide.
The instructional designers at SHPRS are certified Quality Matters Peer Reviewers. (Faculty can become certified as well, and are encouraged to do so!) ID@SHPRS can perform QM reviews of your course, either informally or as part of a formal process.
