Purpose and Mission
Our unit exists to support the teaching outreach of ASU's School of Historical, Philosophical, and Religious Studies. We provide consultation, training, and support for everyone who provides instruction to SHPRS’ students — at all levels and in all formats. We focus first on pedagogy and design; technological concerns are later and serve the needs of the users, not the other way around.
Aligning Our PositionThe practice of teaching in SHPRS is impacted by many entities. We comply with Federal standards; policies from the AZ Board of Regents; accrediting bodies; and initiatives from ASU, The College (CLAS), and EdPlus. The cognitive science of learning is constantly evolving, producing compelling research and insights that affect practice. Various types of available technology provided by the University Technology Office (UTO) offer their own limitations and opportunities. And SHPRS itself has internal guidelines to influence teaching, as well.
It sounds daunting, but all of these forces are united by a common interest: the success of our students. The ASU Charter states, "we measure ourselves... by whom we include and how they succeed." That’s what drives us, that’s what keeps us going. Instructional Designers can help keep it all straight. We recognize that one of our roles as a service unit of the School is to keep the communication flowing among all the various entities that contribute to our outstanding courses.
